I treat each individual differently
depending on their needs and learning style. For Bluegrass, Irish and
roots music, I advocate a mostly by-ear (as opposed to reading)
approach, at least for getting started- this allows you to focus more
on the sound and techniques. Should you want to add reading (standard
notation and/or tablature) we can do so. For jazz and all around
theory, reading is very helpful (but not required).
Serious students should expect to
practice a minimum of one hour a day to see progress in their skills.
Two focused half hour daily sessions can be very effective. I am a
strong advocate of using the metronome to develop a stronger sense of
time.
At this time I regret that I cannot take on children, or adults who are complete beginners.
To store the information, I ask that
you bring either a blank cassette tape or if you have a minidisc
recorder or other digital medium, you can bring that, whatever you
prefer is fine with me. It is much better to have something to refer to
when you are practicing or trying to remember things!
Due to my responsibilities at Berklee, my at-home schedule is limited to TUESDAYS ONLY between
9:30 and 4:30pm only, NO NIGHTS OR WEEKENDS. Available slots are obviously very limited. I do not make house calls.
24 Hour notice of cancellation required (other than weather related) or full lesson fee must be paid.
I am not allowed to use Berklee as a facility for teaching non-enrolled students.
My rate is $70 for a 45-50 minute
"hour" (just like a therapist, but cheaper!!). Most people come once
every two weeks, although you are welcome to do once a week if you
prefer. Lessons are scheduled on a week-by-week basis, and I request
cash payment at the conclusion of each lesson.
